The Joy of Tutoring

I find that English tutoring one-to-one helps to establish a close rapport between the tutor and student, enabling a much more meaningful and beneficial relationship to develop than in a normal classroom environment. Many students often feel that in an average class of twenty to thirty students that they are simply just another face in the crowd and cannot receive the personal attention that they require. Some of these problems can also be overcome by using an Education Consultant.

Spending even an hour each week one-to-one with a student allows the tutor to identify the key academic strengths and weaknesses that are unique to each child. Providing a personal and trusting setting with the student often allows students to honestly voice their concerns and to share the inevitable stress many encounter when taking important exams. Such as the SAT.

The majority of international schools in Hong Kong have changed from the A-Level system to adopting the International Baccalaureate system, in the hope of encouraging students to be more well-rounded and to have a greater appreciation of learning and of other cultures. Learning a language with a language specialist such as a French tutor can also help this area. Certainly, requiring students to fulfill 150 hours of “creativity, action and service” (CAS) enables many students to help those less fortunate than themselves. More information can be found about this area in HK school news blog.

Students at international schools in Hong Kong Are aiming for an International Education tend to have a greater appreciation and understanding of other cultures, through the huge variety of nationalities attending international schools. Nevertheless, academically speaking, many students find the IB system to be very demanding and report feeling unsure of how to fulfill the necessary requirements.

Many students come to ITS Tutorial School because they feel overburdened with homework and balancing the different subjects. ITS seeks not to replicate their knowledge at school, but to supplement, broaden and consolidate their knowledge. We often work to help them with exam techniques and to learn how to respond to examination style questions. Furthermore, the greater coursework content of the IB – through the Extended Essay and Internal Assessment – challenges the students to think in-depth about a focused piece of work. At ITS, we help students to develop and structure their answers in an effective and logical manner.

The Second language dilemma

There is a dilemma currently facing senior second students in International schools in Hong Kong. This dilemma revolves around the problem of a second or subsequent language. The change towards the International Baccalaureate IB in the majority of International schools in Hong Kong means that a large number of students are faced with a problem when it comes to choosing a second language to study. For example should a student choose to learn French, Spanish or to learn Mandarin .

The IB Diploma wants to create well-rounded senior secondary students. To this end, the subjects which students must take during their final two years of secondary school are very heavily prescribed. Students are required to take their first language, a second language, a maths, a science and a humanities subject. In Hong Kong, the vast majority of students take English as their first language. However, the choice of a second language can be problematic, especially for students who are not ethnically Chinese. Whereas those that are ethnically Chinese can easily find a private English tutor to help them with their English. Whether this is for thir schooling or to help students prepare for the IELTS exam.

Hong Kong is a very homogenous society, with over 96% of the population being ethnically Chinese. However, the populations of international schools are much more diverse. The typical clientele of an International school includes non – Chinese children who have grown up in Hong Kong, as well as students whose parents have moved to Hong Kong from other locations and educational jurisdictions. These students are also required to take a second language at IB level. This is also a reason that many parents are now considering the local Hong Kong senior syllabus called the HKDSE .

A number of locally born students, even if they are not from Chinese families, will take Chinese, which in an educational context means Mandarin. However, there are a lot of students who have limited or no exposure to Chinese. These students can generally choose between French, Spanish, Italian and German. However, the actual languages available can depend on the individual school and the staffing options that school might have when it comes to teaching a second language. Students can take a second language as a B language (which means a non-native speaker) or as an Ab initio language, which is a new learner of the language. However, many students who find themselves in this position worry that they will be disadvantaged by taking a language which they are relatively new at. Many students supplement their language classes by taking a language holiday.

The desire for the IB to produce well-rounded students who have knowledge and learning in not only their own language but also a second language is an admirable goal. Parents who have children who are concerned by their ability to pick up a second language at this level should be encouraged to work at the language in a systematic way, particularly trying to build up vocabulary in order to prepare for their exams. More discussion of these issues can be seen at Hong Kong school news The information for this site is also available in Chinese at: ?????,.

Business Intelligence in Action: Employee Turnover

Measuring the impact of voluntary employee turnover is a great example of how business intelligence can be investigated at multiple levels. In a high-turnover environment such as retail or a customer service call centre, single percentage point reductions in retention rates can have a significant impact both on operational performance and the bottom line. But even if they’re able to measure turnover accurately – and given the difficulty many large enterprises have in establishing current headcount, that in itself shouldn’t be taken for granted – most organisations have tended to assess it in relation to historical patterns and industry norms.

While it’s useful to know whether turnover rates are climbing or falling, this kind of information is really only an indicator that problems exist, and – if the information is broken down by geography or business unit – of where those problems occur. Equally important is to find out which types of employee turnover cause most pain to the business, so that retention programmes can be prioritised. One approach is to take a selection of employees from different parts of the business and build an impact profile for each of them, assessing:

Total cost of recruiting a replacement comprising
Direct external expenditure (advertising charges, agency fees etc)
Internal costs (e.g. cost of HR and management resource allocated to recruitment)
Opportunity cost where relevant (e.g. in diverting a sales manager’s time from customer-facing work to recruitment)
Training costs, including cost of structured training, plus an allocation for the management and peer-level resource required for “on the job” education
Allocation for reduction in productivity – Productivity usually declines as soon as an employee resigns and begins to work out their notice period.

The broader business impact assessment would include:

Direct business impact – For example, the departure of a senior manager in product design may slow a development project and delay product release, impacting sales and marketing strategy and delaying revenue generation
Loss of employee knowledge and experience – This is hard to put a figure on, but it should be possible to factor in the impact on tangible outputs (such as sales), and perhaps measure softer factors such as customer or partner relationships on a sliding scale of risk
Impact on team morale

The end result will be a series of comparative analyses looking at multiple impact factors, which provide a context for targeting retention initiatives. As with each of these kinds of analytical exercises, the aim is to provide indicators and parameters – it’s not necessarily a comprehensive audit.

Finding the Perfect Diaper Bag: It May Not be a Diaper Bag

Most women are very particular about the purse they choose to carry. Some women like to carry a classic and timeless handbag, while other women like to keep up with every latest handbag trend. Still other women like to have several choices in their handbag collection: some timeless and sophisticated handbag choices and other trendy and stylish choices. So it would only make sense that when a woman becomes a mother that she would have just as much interest in choosing a diaper bag.

When I became pregnant with my first child, I was somewhat obsessed with finding the perfect diaper bag. I talked to all of my friends that had children and asked them about the diaper bags they had chosen. I did countless hours of online research of various diaper bags. I read pregnancy and parenting message boards about which diaper bags were the best. I read pregnancy and parenting magazine articles about what to look for in a diaper bag. I read various mommy blogs posts about different mother’s favorite diaper bag choices. It seemed like the more research I did, the more overwhelmed I became with the all of the choices. And the funny thing is that the diaper bag I ended up with was not even technically a diaper bag at all. So if you are as particular about your diaper bag choice as you are about selecting a purse for yourself, you should think outside of the box… or bag… too. There are several places you may find a bag to suit your needs as a new mother that may not involve the word, diaper, at all.

My first diaper bag ended up being a “free gift with purchase” from a department store makeup counter. It was a simple vinyl tote bag with a pocket on either end and a pocket on the interior. It was a lovely tangerine color that did not scream “diaper bag” at all. It was large enough to hold all of my baby’s necessities along with the items that I could not live without as well. When I got this bag, I did not intend to use it as a diaper bag at all. I just procrastinated making a choice in purchasing a “real” diaper bag so long that before I knew it I had a baby and I needed a bag to carry all of her gear. This bag worked perfectly and at what a wonderful price point: free! I ended up realizing that all of my fretting over finding the perfect diaper bag was not really necessary at all. And as an added bonus, this bag can be used as a regular tote once it is no longer needed for baby gear.

Another place you may find an unlikely diaper bag is in the purse section of any department store or large discount retailer. Large tote bags and large over the shoulder unstructured bohemian chic bags are in right now. Both of these types of bags would work perfectly fine as a diaper bag. Really the only thing you need to keep in mind when selecting a diaper bag is the size and the utility. If it is big enough to hold everything you need to carry around with you and your baby on a regular basis, and if it is configured in such a way that suits your needs, there is no reason why it can not be used as a diaper bag!

Lottery Prize Money

Anyone above the age of 18 is eligible to play lotteries. In this growing population of the world, there are numerous adults who not only love the game of lottery but also are also regular players. There are approximately 60% of adults who play lotteries in the United States alone, most of them being regular players. In addition, some youngsters play lottery, though it is illegal. Since such a lot of games of lottery are organized, there are many prizes to be won – lot of money involved.

Different states have different procedures of claiming the prize money. Some states like Florida or Missouri have a rule that the prize money must be claimed within 6 months from the date of the draw. According to the lotto rules of the United Kingdom, if the prize money is not claimed within 180 days, it goes to some charitable institution. In most states if the prize money is less, it can be claimed directly from the lottery retailer itself. If the amount is somewhat high, maybe around $50,000, then it must be claimed from the district office of the lottery firm. If the prize is even bigger, the winner has to claim his win from the head office of the lottery firm.

The amount of the prize money that a winner will receive depends on the number of players who have won. The prize money for that game or category will be divided equally among all the winners. Also, the receivable amount is calculated after the tax is deducted from the winning amount.

The winning amounts from lotteries are usually paid through insurance support. There are two types of payment procedures. Either they are paid in a lump sum or in installments as preferred by the winner. Most winners prefer the installment scheme, as the tax deduction is much less and there is a regular income coming in every year. If over the years the winner expires, the remaining amount is paid to his/her spouse or children, whoever has been nominated.

There are many winners who, even after receiving big prize money, have become bankrupt in a very short time. Many do not know how to go about utilizing or investing the money and have made some wrong investments where they lost all their money. Some have just blown up their money in a short while by purchasing all the luxury items that they had dreamt of all their lives and could not achieve it due to shortage of funds. There are others who have been cheated by friends and other people who were jealous of his/her win. Therefore, as people are very eager to win a lottery, they should be equally careful about what they do with the prize money. They should invest reasonably in luxury and then get proper advices to invest in various businesses that will be profitable, which in turn will help them for a better future.

So, play more games of lotto and win more, but be sure not to fall into the trap and lose it again.

Lotteries are Fixed

How do you feel when you hear that a lottery is fixed? Lots of questions arise in our minds when we plan to play a game of lottery. Are there any scams involved? Is there any special system? Have they already decided on the winner even before selling the lottery tickets? So many questions daunt us even before we choose which lottery games we would like to play. Many people do think that lotteries are fixed; that the winners are chosen in advance.

Let us consider the fact that lotteries are fixed. The next question should be, ‘Why?’ and ‘What is the reason of fixing up a lottery?’ There is such a lot of revenue coming in from lotteries. Then why would any organization like to do such a thing? It would be mere foolishness. If they fix it up, it will definitely not be hidden for too long. Once the people come to know about it, would they trust these agencies? Would they ever come back to play the games? Who would be at a loss? Of course, the lottery agencies. The lottery syndicates are set up to make money. They will definitely not go into such foolish acts of fixing up winners and face major setbacks.

Another reason why any lottery firm will not get into such rackets would be that they have to follow certain rules and regulations laid down by the respective state government. If any kind of fraud is involved, the government will take strict actions and they might have to shut down. None of the lottery firms would ever want that to happen.

So, you see that a lottery just cannot be fixed. Are you still not convinced? Then, here’s how lotteries ARE fixed. Confused? Read on.

Though the games played in a lottery vary from state to state, country to country, but the basics are almost the same. Mostly lotto is played with a set of ping-pong balls with numbers printed on them. The balls are run through a machine, which picks up numbers at a random. Now, the lotto firms keep a regular check on the machinery as well as the balls that are used. It is quite possible that after a few games the balls can be damaged or become dirty. Because of the wear and tear, there could be a difference in their weights too. This might cause some balls to be selected more often than the others. Hence, the lottery agencies have to fix these problems in order to avoid the difference. The balls are changed regularly, and similarly the machinery is also checked and adjusted to fix all the problems that might lead to discrepancy. The state governments are also very strict in this respect and keeps a regular check on whether or not the machinery etc. are maintained properly and are up to the mark.

So, you see that fixing in lottery is of a positive nature.

In order to win a game or to win it over and over, you don’t need to tamper the machinery or fix the lottery. The people who have won more than once have not used any such means. According to them, the only way to win is to keep on playing and following the particular system or pattern. Once you get used to the pattern, no one can stop you from winning and that too without any fraud.
